Oh god, Eddie Money? Who came up with that billing?

I've personally always wondered what was up with Phil at the end of Doin' That Rag from 2/21/69. The one where out of the acapella ending he yells "you motherfucker! HEY!" Very jarring and slightly disturbing.

I always think that the Phil mf yell at the Dream Bowl is a possible short sharp nip from an electronic mouse; the false start and another "hey" at the beginning of the following Dark Star suggests something buzzing and fizzing.

One of my favourite shows btw.

A mysterious outcry from Phil - it reminds me, the Dead were not alone on the stage up to about '72....all kinds of people could be wandering around, or hanging out on the amps, as you see in the Veneta '72 video....I think it was the 9/30/72 show where some topless lady was said to be dancing on stage with them? And there are other shows where you can hear random guys ranting into the mike, for instance 6/7/70 (in Cryptical), or 12/29/69 (in Good Lovin'), or 3/8/70 (in Not Fade Away), or Woodstock '69 (Lovelight of course), etc. etc.
Those were definitely not the "take a step back" days!

"

but that was Ken Babbs. I'm sure him and Kesey had free rein being that they went back to the acid tests

I once heard it said that the guy in the Cryptical reprise on 6/7/70 was Robert Hunter, but I never believed that. Then of course there is the ranting woman in the beginning... To this day I wonder if we'll ever figure out who did the "walkin the same, long mile" rap in the Caution from 11/8/69.

I am unaware of the examples of people grabbing mics from 12/29/69 and 3/8/70. I have those shows but don't recall anything. I'll have to go back and listen now.

The 11/8/69 guy is a mystery....a poet in the roadcrew?
12/29/69 is just a freak in the audience - 3/8/70 apparently was too, or maybe he was a "guest" of the band's, either way they let him take over for quite some time, check the debate in the reviews:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd70-03-08.sbd.9195.sbeok.shnf

As far as guests, this guy's the worst - Wayne Ceballos sang the Lovelight on 6/8/69 - and there's the unknown babbler on the 8/23/69 Lovelight - then there's the madness of the 7/12/69 Lovelight.
Of course the Dead were probably glad to see Ken Babbs onstage at Woodstock (he also does some chatter at the 5/31/69 show) - if we're discussing "angry Dead", the Woodstock show is definitely one occasion where they were upset & alarmed by all the equipment troubles!

Occasionally in '69 the Dead had actual musical guests too (Elvin Bishop 6/6+8/69, Ron Hawkins 6/13/69, Charles Lloyd 8/21/69, Peter Green 2/1/70, possibly Gregg Allman 7/7/69, the Santana drummers 5/29/69, and the sax & violin players on 8/3/69).
